Gender identity
(noun)
Gender identity refers to a person's own view of their gender. Gender has three primary components: (1) physical, (2) social/cultural, and (3) internal/sensate (Source).
Examples: Sheila's birth-assigned sex was "female" and her gender identity is "woman". Gus's sex assigned at birth was also "female", but his gender identity is "transmasculine" and "man". Other examples of gender identities: Nonbinary, genderfluid, transfemme.
Why it’s important to know this: Our gender identity can shape the way we experience the world, including our sense of belonging and inclusion in certain spaces. By understanding different gender identities, we can create a space where everybody feels included and valuable.
