Ally
(noun)
“Ally” is a broad term for someone who supports marginalized groups. Relating to the LGBTQ+ community, allies include both heterosexual and cisgender people who support equality.
Examples: Mr. Yoshida put up a pride flag in his classroom to signal to his LGBTQ+ students that he is an ally who welcomes their identities.
Why it’s important to know this: Allyship is an ongoing learning process. Being an ally doesn’t mean being perfect or knowing everything. It just means being open to learning and advocating for equality alongside LGBTQ+ individuals.
